Los Bagels is a multicultural bagel bakery and cafe located among the redwoods of Humboldt County, California. Since 1984, our traditional boiled, then baked bagels have been available at two locations in Arcata and Eureka. Since 1984, our traditional boiled, then baked bagels have been available at two locations in Arcata and Eureka. Dennis Rael founded Los Bagels in 1984, he grew up in a multicultural household. His father was of Mexican descent and his mother was from Jewish ancestry, in their household both cultures were celebrated. This led Dennis to create a multicultural café, combining traditional Jewish food, with the tastes and flavors of Mexico. Los Bagels Recipes and Lore includes the now legendary recipes that have made Los Bagels an institution, not only in Humboldt County, but across America. This cookbook has recipes in three major categories, Bagels and Breads , Sweets and Treats and Soups, Spreads and Chile Verde - it has unique illustrations by Steven Vander Meer and William R. Prescott. Bagels and Breads recipes include plain bagels, jalapeno bagels, whole wheat raisin bagels, pumpernickel bagels, challah, raisin challah, corn rye bread, cinnamon apple bread and bolillos. Recipes included in Sweets and Treats include, double chocolate brownies, sticky buns, hamantachen, Mexican chocolate pie, rum pumpkin bread, huckleberry bread, lime walnut bread, mandarin cranberry bread, fruit cake, rugalah, biscochitos, lime corn cookies, Mexican chocolate crinkles, peanut butter cookies, manhole cover cookies, poppy seed muffins, strawberry muffins, pumpkin bran muffins, blueberry muffins, pan de muerto, empanadas, knish and kuchen. Recipes in the Soups, Spreads and Chile Verde include Sopa de maiz, tortilla soup, Brazilian black bean soup, smoked salmon spread, chili verde de mi Tia Maria, guacamole, pesto and hummus. There is a section of the cookbook dedicated to Dia de los Muertos, as well as our incredible recipe for Pan de Muerto, or Dead Bread. At Los Bagels, we celebrate Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. We set up an ofrenda in our locations and community member bring in photos and remembrances of their loved ones. We also celebrate traditional Jewish holidays, such as Passover, Purim, Rosh Hashanah and Hanukkah. Included is an old family recipe for hamantachen which is absolutely delicious. Los Bagels makes all their products from scratch, and now you can too. Los Bagels is more than real bagels. Dennis Rael has been baking bagels and amazing baked goods since he was a young boy.
